I want to start off by telling you a little bit about myself. My name is JP Gutierrez. I am a husband, father, and I have a crazy addiction to drag racing!! Racing isn’t in my blood. I didn’t get the “bug” from a family member but I did grow up at the race track. My dad loved going to the races and hanging out with his friends, especially Jack Ostrander. Jack is the one that showed me what true drag racing was and where I found my love for the sport. I began my journey to compete in NHRA’s fastest quarter mile class when my family and I joined NHRA’s Junior Dragster Ranks in 1998. It was during this time that I learned the core values of a driver and team owner. In 2004, I wanted to gather more knowledge about the mechanics of drag racing’s quickest and fastest race cars, Top Fuel Dragster. This is when I joined veteran driver Jack Ostrander’s Top Fuel team that campaigned two Top Fuel Dragsters. It was on Ostrander’s team that I began to have a deep understanding of the mechanical side and tuning of Supercharged Dragsters. In 2008, my family and I constructed a Top Dragster. After only two years competing in Top Dragster I, along with my brother Phil, came to the conclusion that it was time to go faster. Gutierrez Brothers Racing, Inc. was started in 2010 for the purpose of competing in NHRA’s fastest quarter mile class, Top Alcohol Dragster. Now at the age of 31 I am a seasoned veteran in the seat of our Supercharged Top Alcohol Dragster with a best elapsed time of 5.25 seconds at over 272 mph in the quarter mile! I never would have been able to do any of this without my mom, dad, and brother Phil. They always knew I had the “fire in my belly” even when they didn’t.

I met my wife, Kara, at Autorama in 2012! I would have never imagined that would be where I found my wife but I did! She also grow up at the race track with her dad and his friends. She worked on their Pro-Mod car then on a Top Alcohol Funny Car. So to me it was always meant to be…..awwww…but seriously she is my rock! She works on our dragster, backs me up from the burn out, packs the parachutes, cooks for the family, is our CFO and does the marketing for Gutierrez Brothers Racing, and raises are adorable daughter Sophia. She is the first one to agree to my crazy dreams and ideas especially when it comes to racing. Having her and Sophia at the race track helping and cheering me on is a huge deal for me. I work during the day and every night I go to the shop and work on the race car and Saturdays too. I spend every hour I can making sure the car is fast and safe. In doing that though I am not home as often as a “normal” husband/father would. That being said, drag racing can be very hard on a person let alone a family. So I know how lucky I am that Kara is always by my side helping me keep my dreams alive!

I even was able to suck her younger brother Kevin into the racing world! He grew up at the tracks with Kara but wasn’t always a part of racing when he got older. But somehow I have convinced him that going racing is a good idea! Kevin and Phil are always there at the shop with me making all the crazy ideas happen. If they weren’t there making sure I stay on track every night who knows what I could get into! Having my brothers there at the shop working and at the track making the car run is just another great thing about my story. Who else gets to say that their family and their in-laws are all working together to make their dreams come true!!

Now you know a little more about me and how I got into racing and how I keep going. Needless to say without all the people I mentioned I wouldn’t be doing this so they deserve a big THANK YOU!!! Now get back to work everyone!!!
